ISLAND SIGHTS
While touring the island be sure to check out some of the following:
- Courthouse - In downtown Philisburg was built in 1793. This unique two story building has housed the council hall, weigh station, post office and jail over the years. After some recent renovation it now is used exclusively by the court.
- Historic Forts - Be sure to visit some of the several forts on both sides of the island. Fort Amsterdam in Philipsburg dates back to 1631 and has been operated by the Dutch and Spaniards. Fort Willem sits atop Fort Hill and dominates Philipsburg. It is easy to recognize by the television transmitting tower. A tour of forts would not be complete without a trip to Fort de Marigot high above the city of Marigot. Wear comfortable shoes, it’s a long walk to the top.
- Beaches - The island has a wide range of beaches for visitors to choose from. All beaches are free to everyone and since the island has strong European influences several are favored by topless sun-worshippers. Try to visit some of the following beaches:
Baie Lonque - secluded so it’s very quiet. Clothing optional!
Baie Orientale - has wind surfing, horseback riding and a clothing optional policy. The entire bay is an underwater marine reserve.
Baie Rouge - considered the most beautiful beach on the French side - the cove is expansive, sand clean and the water is a breathtaking shade of turquoise.
Dawn Beach - although a little difficult to get to this beach on the Dutch side has really fine white sand and the snorkeling is some of the best in the world.
Maho Bay and Mullet Bay - are popular beaches on hotel property but they are open to the public.
Oyster Pond - is considered the best beach for body surfing.
